The above picture shows a construction site. The crane is used to lift heavy objects from a lower surface to a higher one using a pulley system.
If pulleys had not been invented, how can heavy materials used to construct buildings be moved to higher surfaces using other simple machines?
How To Soar in PSLE - BTPS Way!!
Interact with complex questions / graphs / pictures to pick up valuable clues (don't highlight - just use your pen to underline words or scribble notes)
Start with Booklet A and do it meticulously with full focus - explore all 4 distractors before making final choice.
MANAGE your TIME - to score well, you need to try to finish ALL questions.
Specific answers = answers that are relevant to question.
When confused, choose any of the following strategies:
1. Ask, "What Science idea is being used in question?"
2. Pose other questions to clarify your thoughts
3. COMPARE to another set-up
4. COMPARE to a reverse situation
5. Connect to your knowledge in life (yes, you do have lots of prior / other knowledge)
6. Break down your answer in steps before crafting final answer.
Common problems with wrong answers:
*Answers are generic/vague and do not connect to that specific question
*Answers are not scientific and do not explain using Science ideas
*Answers do not make use of data provided when asked
*Answers did not make comparisons - use words like more/most etc..when asked

When Ice Changes into Water by Goh Chee Yan - 5G
Do you wonder whether the mass of ice changes when it melts into water. Try this out:
1. Put a few ice cubes into a plastic bag
2. Tie the mouth of the bag tightly
3. Weigh the bag of ice cubes (if there is condensation outside the bag, wipe it dry before weighing)
4. Place the bag in the sun
5. When ice has melted, wipe the outside of the bag dry (refer to step 3)
6. Weigh the bag
You will discover that the mass of the bag remains the same!

Instead , a inclined plane ( ramp) can be used . However , it takes more effort to built and to use a ramp . So the invention of pulley is better to be used in this case .

A inclined plane can be used. however,as Yuling posted,it takes more effort to built and to use a ramp.
People can use inclined plane, and you can make it as long as possible. You can also put a layer of rubber inorder to prevent it from sliding down from high.Or people can also use wheel and axle just like well, people stangding on top and pull the water up,it can reduce the effort needed and bring us more convenience.

I think without the use of pulleys, inclined plane can be use too replace pulleys... but if we actually use inclined plane, more effort will be needed...
oops i forgot to write my name for the comment i just post...i am douglas

A wheel and axle can be used, but you will need to make the wheel very big.

We could also use an inclined plane(ramp).

An inclined plane can be used, but in order to reduce the effort needed, it must be built less steeper. Even so, time is still needed to build the ramp and also to use it, especially since it requires a pulling force to move it up. If this continues, the time taken will be much longer and the workers arm will be very tired. Plus, the ramp might be worn-out after being used for sometime. Pulleys will still be the best simple machine to move up heavy objects.

OMG LETS INVENT AN ANTI GRAVITY THINGY! Which is impossible. Without the use of pulleys, it is "Impossible" to lift a very heavy concrete block or steel poles up the building. If we do invent anti-gravity devices. The use of pulleys will be useless. Pulleys are one of the main and most important simple machines on earth. Ramps, in this case, have to be stretched over a long distance. Even if we manage to build a ramp that long, what about the weight? How are we supposed to lift it up high enough to reach the building? So, pulleys are very important. Okay, lemme disagree with weiwei. If we do put a rubber layer there. HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO MOVE IT UP. With the friction stopping the heavy stuff from dropping. Wouldn't it be harder for the things to move up? Furthermore, gravity is acting on the heavy things too.
Therefore, the final conclusion is that without pulleys being invented. Most building wouldn't be 10 stories high. I wonder how Egyptians built the pyramid O.o
Btw the top post is from lee shyh haur of 6 faith. Dont steal me credits you nubs!
We can use gear system. On a long block, put a line of gears on it,beside,we will have a big gear beside it and use a lever to make the gear move.

We can use an incline plane to replace pulleys. But a greater effort will be needed.
Megan, 6Faith
we could use a wheel and axle, just with strings...which would be similar to the pulley...if not we could use an inclined plane...which would take more effort and time...

Kenneth Wong(6J)
Instead of using pulleys,an inclined plane can be used.Although an extremely long ramp is needed to reduce a lot of effort, the ramp could be made spiral so that the effort needed to lift the load,or in this case push the load up is reduced.

Without using pulleys we can use Belt (mechanical)A Belt is a looped strip of flexible material, used to mechanically link two or more rotating shafts. They may be used as a source of motion, to efficiently transmit power, or to track relative movement. Belts are looped over pulleys. In a two pulley system, the belt can either drive the pulleys in the same direction, or the belt may be crossed, so that the direction of the shafts is opposite. As a source of motion, a conveyor belt is one application where the belt is adapted to continually carry a load between two points
Pros and cons
Belt drive, moreover, is simple, inexpensive, and does not require parallel shafts. It helps protect the machinery from overload and jam, and damping it from noise and vibration. Load fluctuations are shock-absorbed (cushioned). They need no lubrication and minimal maintenance. They have high efficiency (90-98%, usually 95%), high tolerance for misalignment, and are inexpensive if the shafts are far apart. Clutch action is activated by releasing belt tension. Different speeds can be obtained by step or tapered pulleys.

Use an inclined plane. The Egyptians rolled their building blocks on sticks up a slope to the construction site of the pyramid(what work).

We can use a inclined plane but more effort is needed so mabey we make coil inclined plane so that we can use less effort to lift the load
a lever could maybe be better than an inclined plane as it takes lesser effort to built it than a ramp and when its fulcrum is closer to the load than effort less effort is needed

tobias(6 hope )
it could be moved by a very long ramp which is not steep and must be a surface which reduces friction between the object and surface area
tobias (6 hope )
We can use an inclined plane. But we got to use lots of surfaces as we want to put lesser effort when we are moving the object to the higher surface. I heard that if we do not want to use lots of surfaces, we can curve the plank. It will required less effort and shorter the surfaces will be less, but I think if we use inclined plane, we need to take lots of time moving the load to the higher surface.
I think the ancient people invented the pulley so that they can reduce the time and the surfaces can be short and same amount of the effort used.
Jin Yun Na 6Grace
We could use an inclined plane, but more effort would be needed to push the objects to the top, that's why different simple machines are invented for their own special use.

If pulleys had not been invented, the only way to transport the items is by an inclined plane. However, by an inclined plane is still not as good as a pulley. Why? Because and inclined plane not only needs us to move by legs to go over it to transport the heavy item, it also goes over a great distance. But not only does it go over a great distance, it also needs to overcome friction. Pulleys on the other hand, does not need us to do much manual work but the load still moves over a great distance making that a disadvantage. But pulleys makes it easier when it is being transported from a lower place to a higher place.
Xinyi 6Grace
Instead of using a pulley, an inclined plane( ramp ) can be used, but an inclined plane( ramp ) requires a long time to build and once workers are done building the inclined plane( ramp ) and finished building things they were supposed to build, the workers need to move the inclined plane( ramp ), but the inclined plane( ramp ) should not be portable, thus they need to demolish the inclined plane( ramp )again.

i think they used a thing that works like a ramp but with gears with chains attatched to the gear and load.As gears with chains move in the same direction.

there are altogether 5 types of simple machine.Lever, pulleys, gears, inclineplane and wheel and axle.Without the pulley, then there would be left with 4.Gears, idon't really understand how the gears and levers work together to make things move up and down but I think Rachel made a good point by using 2 or more simple machines.Wheel and axle,it can be used, but if it is very high up, and it is a very heavy object then a very strong string would be needed. But if the place is not so high and the load is not very heavy, a wheel and axle can be useful. As for incline plane,Singapore is such a small country, having an incline will not be suitable. If the incline plane is spiral,it will take a lot of work and i think it will not match every building.Levers.like a crane but without the pully part then it will work!
Pauline
Using an inclined plane does not only use a lot of effort but it also takes up a lot of space and to build a giant inclined plane needs a lot of time.So i think that the wheel and axle will be more suitable for this use.The wheel and axle may take alot of time to built but we could built a movable one(But even the gaint inclinced plane needs time). And on anvantage is the amount of space used. The wheel and axle also works like the pulley system. So i think that the wheel and axle is most suitable for this situation
The comment above is mine
Ruyan(6grace)
inclined plane can be used.the advantage is that it uses lesser effort to move the load.the disadvantage is that it has to go through a longer distance,it has to be built with a lesser angle of the inclined plane to allow it to use a lesser effort to move the load so it has to occupy a very large place.moreover, the person who is moving the load up has to walk a very long way which requires more time. Conclusion:using a pulley reduce the effort, save time, save more of the place used.Using a pulley is a better way in this case.~audrey 6grace
Without pulleys, we can still use inclined planes ro lift heavy objects from a lower surface to a higher surface. However though, it will need more effort.
Nicole-6Grace
we could use an inclined plane but maybe you may need more than 1 inclined plane as a building is very high. when using the inclined plane, you will need to move and you will need to move alot while pushing or carrying the abject to a higher level but for a pulley u could just use the crane and they will do the job you do not need to move here and there to .
Sally6G
An inclined plane(ramp) can also be use to replace the pulleys. However, the disadvantage of using an inclined plane is that more effort will be needed to lift the load.
Liu Chia Chih 6F
Although pulleys are still the best for lifting the load up from a lower groung to a higher ground, an inclined plane can also be used. But, the inclined has to be made less steep and longer. You still have to use more effort as compared to using a pulley as you still have to overcome friction. When the workers pulling or pushing the load is worn out, the rest would have to suffer as they still have to push it over such a longer distance.
Remus See
An inclined plane could be use, however, we need to use much more effort than the crane. Plus, we need someone to help us push it up.
Ben
we can an inclind plane but we need to move the object avery longer distance and using more effort.we also can use the escalator it will be more effective.
yi wen
inclined plane can be used and also wheel and axle but you need a big one.BIG.but you need Bigger effort .
sorry the above comment is mine

A inclined plane can be used but it would require more effort than a pulley. Therefore,a pulley would still be better.

a lever could maybe be better than an inclined plane as it takes lesser effort to built it than a ramp and when its fulcrum is closer to the load than effort less effort is needed
