How To Soar in PSLE - BTPS Way!!

Interact with complex questions / graphs / pictures to pick up valuable clues (don't highlight - just use your pen to underline words or scribble notes)

Start with Booklet A and do it meticulously with full focus - explore all 4 distractors before making final choice.

MANAGE your TIME - to score well, you need to try to finish ALL questions.

Specific answers = answers that are relevant to question.

When confused, choose any of the following strategies:

1. Ask, "What Science idea is being used in question?"
2. Pose other questions to clarify your thoughts
3. COMPARE to another set-up
4. COMPARE to a reverse situation
5. Connect to your knowledge in life (yes, you do have lots of prior / other knowledge)
6. Break down your answer in steps before crafting final answer.

Common problems with wrong answers:
*Answers are generic/vague and do not connect to that specific question
*Answers are not scientific and do not explain using Science ideas
*Answers do not make use of data provided when asked
*Answers did not make comparisons - use words like more/most etc..when asked

Cranberry Jam in a Jar

This jam was cooked with sugar before being placed in a jar.
What was the purpose of cooking the cranberries first?
How did the fungi grow inside the jar?

I think the purpose is to enable the jam to have a longer shelf. The canned food we have now are also heated before putting in the can to be sent off to supermarkets. In my opinion, the fungi started forming in the jar as the jam had been unused for a long period of time, thus rotting.

The purpose was to enable them to last longer. Like other canned foods, foods are usually preserved through methods such as:
waxing(apples), salting(eggs), pickling(vegetables)and many other methods.

There are two possible reasons to which fungi grew in the jam:
1) The jam has expired due to being unused for a long period of time.
2) Bacteria and fungi grows and multiplies when it is dark, warm and moist. As such, it is possible that a person would have placed a wet spoon into the jam and caused fungi to grow. The jam might also have been warm as bacteria grows in small amount at room temperature. Thus, jam should be placed in the fridge.

I think that its purpose is to kill the bacteria in the cranberries so it is safe to be eaten. Also, when preserved for longer time, there will be lesser bacteria. Over time it may grow, but at least it slows the process down.

The main reason for the fungi to grow inside is most probably due to its exposure with either oxygen or warmth. For example, it might be left in a place where it is not suitable to be (shelves maybe). As there will be warmth in the shelves, fungi can grow. It must be placed at a place where the temperature is suitable.

Another reason might be that it is left open with the lid on. Like this, oxygen can get in easily. With oxygen, fungi can grow.

Q1. The jam was cooked to actually kill the germs inside it and also to lessen the amount of moisture as in order for a thing to decompose, it needs moisture. Therefore when the fruit is cooked, it is dryer than before.
Q2. Probably the jar was not tightly sealed, therefore air which consist of oxygen will enter. In order for a thing to decompose, it needs oxygen. Hence, fungi will grow on it.

the cranberries were cooked so as to get rid of the germs/bacteria and make the jam last for a longer period of time. as for the fungi, it was probably formed because it came into contact with water or oxygen because oxygen is needed for decomposition to take place.

The purpose of cooking the cranberries is to kill bacterias on the cranberries.

The fungi can grow maybe because the jar's cap is not close or the cap isnt air-tight therefore oxygen can go in and fungi can grow on it.

Durian is a kind of preservative. It casn help to preserve the cranberries.by cooking it with sugar it will help to dissolve the shger with the cranberries and it will also be evenly "spread" in the bottle of cranberries.by cooking it,of course it can kill the bacteria in it but i think most importantly is to allow the sugar to dissolve. As compared to cooking the cranberries without any sugar. As for the fungi growing inside the jar,it can maybe be because the lid was not tightly closed the last time the bottle was open.Another reason might be because the bottle of cranberries have already. When things expires, the the preservatives inside the bottle will nto have any effect anymore. From what i think,as fungi reproduce from spores, the spores were able to go into the cranberry jam at all times but the preservatives were able to kill it and not let it be able to survive and therefore, die.but when the preservatives were not able to kill the spores anymore, the spores were able to grow into fungi and rot the cranberries.when these fungi respire, they give out carbon dioxide that traps heat this hat it trapped provides warmth for the fungi.cranberryjam has water and as for the oxygen it needs.it takes from the air outside the bottle, as it is not air tight as earlier.it allowed the spores to enter the bottle.
i think it should be similar to the concept why the can of sone can drinks get bloated and we are told not to drink them.

It is to kill all the bacteria in the jam so that it would last longer . The fungi grew on the jam probably because it is moist or came into contact with oxygen .

I think that the pupose of cooking the jam is to enable the jam to stay longer in the jar when it is still closed .By cooking it can kill bacteria , as well as suck up the air .
The reason for it to grow is:
After u open the cap , air can go in , and fungi and bacteria can also go in .so with the air , which contains oxygen , and the jam which provides the bacteria , or fungi with food as well as water , the bacteria and fungi is eble to thrive in it , and decompose the jam . Another reason might be the food had expired .

as soon as you open the jar some mould particles will enter the jar too and sugar can spped the growth of the mould so thats why you see patches of it on the jam

When we leave our food on the table for too long, and when we want to eat it, our parents will ask us to heat it up.Maybe is to kill the bacteria, or maybe it can be hot so it is more hot and warm.
For Jam, I think it is for a longer shelf period and to perserve it for a long time.
As for the fungi growing inside the jar,it can maybe be because the lid was not tightly closed the last time the bottle was open or it had already entered. Fungi is from spores so maybe some tiny particles of spores went in when it was opened for a short period of time, thus it reproduced and become fungi

I heard from my grandmother that it is to ensure that we can last longer. Fruits can rotten really fast but if you want to make a jam, the fruit should not be rotten as you cannot eat it. Cooking the cranberries is to kill all the bacteria so that it will not rot. My grandmother also said that you must heat the glass bottle so that the fungi will not grow inside the bottle. It is because when you heat the bottle, inside the bottle will not have so many organisms living. Thus, reducing the number of bacteria to decrease so it will not be rotten quickly. I think the fungi grow inside the jar because inside the jar there was already fungi and other organisms. They need warmth, oxygen and water to grow. So when the jar was not clean properly, the fungi inside will grow rapidly when the jam is put inside. This is because the fungi will have water and warmth from the jam.

The Jam in the jar is heated up to destroy the bacteria in the jam, the fungi that formed in the jam were caused by probaly 2 reasons.
1.The Machines that were used were not very clean and it might contain a little spores in it, thus causing the Jam to form fungus.
2.When the Jam jar is opened, the oxygen and some fungi spores entered the jar, the fungus might have grown in the jar.
3.The Jam was stored in it very humid environment and due to the moisture in the Jar, the spores germinated and thus, the Fungus were formed.

For fungi to grow, there must be oxygen, moisture and a cool environment

Q1)What was the purpose of cooking the cranberries?
A1)The purpose was maybe beacause the cranberries were put in the can for a period of time and it is very cool and the person may not like by eating it just like that.
Q2)How did the fungi grow inside the jar?
A2)Fungi is a decomposer and it decomposes things into simpler substances. The conditions for decomposition are warmth, air and moisture. The fungi got there so fast was because of the heat from the pan that it was cooked from and since it was not put in any zip-lock bag or whatever that can not let pass, there is air and jam itself already posseses moisture!Q1)What was the purpose of cooking the cranberries?

I think the purpose was to kill the bacteria. However, there is another reason for cooking it. The other reason is to be able to draw out pectin(any of various water-soluble substances). Another possible reason could be dissolving the sugar.
The possibilty of fungi growing is canned food is quite high as sometimes we do not close the can or bottle properly. When we do not close the cap properly, we leave a small gap. We know that fungi disperses by spores, thus the fungi could end up being dispersed in the bottle. The condition of the jam is a place which fungi is able to survive in. It has oxygen for it to respire. It has moisture and warmth that is trapped in the bottle.

I think that the purpose is to enable the jam to last longer so that people would sooner or later purchase the jam.I think that the factors which contributed to the growth of fungi were warmth, moisture, and temperature as the jam might have expired. Thus, I thing that it is important to look at the expiry dates before buying items.Ha ha!

The jam was cooked so as to kill/destroy the fungi and bacteria in it.

But when the cap of the jar was removed/opened, the air around the jar of jam was able to enter the jar, the air surrounding the jar contains fungi spores and bacteria.

But even with the fungi spores and bacteria in it now, and the jar is not left in the fridge, no fungus would be observed as there are preservatives in the jam.(most jams which are not homemade usually they contain preservatives.)

Only after a long period of time after the effect of the preservatives has worn off, the fungi will start to grow if the jar of jam is not put into the fridge.

p.s. besides cooking, you can also can prevent food products from going bad so easily by soaking the food in salt, sugar, add preservatives, dry the food till no water content is left in the food product, freeze the food, make the place where the food is stored vacuum, pickling, etc.

When Ice Changes into Water by Goh Chee Yan - 5G

Do you wonder whether the mass of ice changes when it melts into water. Try this out:

1. Put a few ice cubes into a plastic bag
2. Tie the mouth of the bag tightly
3. Weigh the bag of ice cubes (if there is condensation outside the bag, wipe it dry before weighing)
4. Place the bag in the sun
5. When ice has melted, wipe the outside of the bag dry (refer to step 3)
6. Weigh the bag

You will discover that the mass of the bag remains the same!
There is no change in mass when ice melts!!
