How Much Ice?

What is the effect of putting ice cubes in a glass  water? How does the number of ice cubes affect the time taken to melt in the liquid?

After putting ice in a glass of water, the water becomes cold as the water loses heat to the ice cubes. When there are more ice cubes, the time taken for them to melt increases. The water loses heat to the ice cubes equally, increasing the time taken.

Many people like to drink cold water,so when we put ice cubes into the water ,the water becomes cold water.This happens as the water loses heat to the ice cubes.When there are more ice cubes,a longer time is needed for

When you put ice cubes in a glass of water, after a while you will feel that the water is cold. It turns cold as the ice has melted. Why will the ice melt? Normally, the temperature of the water we pour before adding ice is in room temperature, so there is a temperature difference between the ice cubes and water. The ice cubes gain heat from the water and thus, melts.
If there are more ice in the glass, it would take a longer time to melt. The ice cubes would still gain heat, however at a slower rate. They would be gaining heat from the same glass of water which is of the same temperature, but 'sharing' the heat.

Q1. The water loses heat to the ice cubes therefore the temperature will be lower than before. But after some time, the water and the melted ice will be at the same temperature as both gains or loses heat from each other.
Q2. As the number of ice cubes increases, the longer it takes for the ice to melt. The ice gains heat from the water equally therefore the temperature transfered to the ice cubes each time is much lesser in comparism to one ice cube. Hence, it will take a longer time to melt.

There will be a longer time needed if you put more ice-cubes inside as the more ice cubes,the more you will make the ice colder , hence it will take a longer time for the ice to gain heat from the water .

By putting more ice in the water , it will take a longer time for the ice cubes to melt as the ice cubes gain heat slower . The heat from the water has to transfer to other ice cubes and leaves less heat compared to when there is only one ice cube.

The effect is to make the glass of water colder than before. This happens as the ice gained heat from the water which is of a higher temperature and causes the ice to melt. Actually when it melts, there will be tiny water droplets on the outer surface of the glass, which is caused by condensation of the ice cubes. This will make the temperature of the water to decrease and hence, allows it to be colder than at room temperature.

The time for the ice to melt is longer when there are more ice cubes in the water. When there are more ice cubes in a glass, they will have to "share" the heat with each other. Like this, over time, they will gain heat more slower and thus, melt slower too as the water is at room temperature. If the water is not at room temperature but boiled, the ice cubes will take a shorter time to melt. But no matter what the temperature is, the more the number of ice cubes, the slower they melt.

Ice is the solid state of water. Adding more ice to a glass of water will help to increase the lifespan of the water in solid state . Example: 1 unit of ice takes 5 minutes to melt , then 2 units of ice will take 10 minutes to melt. Thus putting more ice in a cup will lenghten the melting rate.

(a)Heat flows from a hotter object to a cooler object until it reaches a state of equilibrium. When one ice cube is added to the water, the ice cube melts but as a result, the water becomes cooler.

(b)If two ice cubes are added into the water, the same amount of heat is supposed to be shared among two ice cubes. As a result the time taken is longer.
e.g. if 1000u of HE(heat energy) is used to transfer to one ice cube, the time taken is 10s.
if 1000u of HE is used to transfer to two ice cubes, the time taken is 20s.
if the time desired is 10s, then the amount of heat must double to 2000u.

The more the ice cube is,the longer the time it took to melt.As the ice cube gain heat to the water while the water lose heat to the ice cube,if there are more ice cube the water will lose heat to the ice cube faster,while the ice cube gain heat faster it became colder ,and it means more nearer to the cubes temperature and the ice cube will gain heat slower as the temperature of water does not have much difference to the ice cube.

When you first take a ice cube out of the fridge, the temperature would be around -2degrees, so when you put it into the glass of water, the ice cube gained heat from the water which would be at room temp. and the water would lose heat from the ice. As water is a good conductor of heat, it increases heat transfer.After a few minutes, you will start to see tiny water droplets out of trhe glass as condensation takes place.After a while, the ice will melt and the temp. of the water decreases and become colder compared to leaving it into the open.
When there are more ice cubez, the temp. of water would decrease rapidly than only one ice cube. So when temp. decreases, the longer time the ice cubes will need to melt as the water had already lost heat and become lower as the temperature gaps reaches closer and closer. SO the more ice cubes, longer time taken for them to melt increases

By placing ice cubes in a glass of water, the water in the glass would, naturally, turn cold as heat travels from a hotter place(in this case, the water) to a colder place(the ice). Thus, the ice will melt, the water would turn cold, the glass would turn cold and the exterior of the glass would have many tiny water droplets.

The greater the number of ice cubes, the longer the time taken for them to melt. This is because the "heat" of the water is distributed equally to each and every of the ice cubes.

We usually put ice cubes in a drink to make it cold so that we can drink it .I think that when we put in ice cubes, it will cause the drink to lose heat while after some time the ice cubes will melt due to gaining heat from the drink. And also adding more ice cubes will cause the drink to stay colder for a longer period of time.

Putting ice cubes in water makes the water lose heat to the colder ice cubes ,but the ice also gains heat from the warm water. Putting more ice cubes in water makes the ice take a longer time to melt as compared to a single ice cube, as more heat from the water is lost to the ice making the water colder. However, there are more ice cubes so more heat can be absorbed without the ice melting. Timothy 6G

When we put ice cubes into the water, the ice cubes gains heat from the water and starts to melt. On the other hand, the water loses heat to the ice cubes and its temperature decreases. The heat in the water is distributed in the water. So, when they are lesser ice cubes, all ice cubes in the water will take a shorter time to melt than compared to when there are more ice cubes. When there are more ice cubes, the heat that is distributed all over the water has to gather at where the ice cubes are, thus, the water will cool down and the ice will melt because it 'absorbed' the heat from the water. Which is also said as, "The water loses heat to the ice cubes".

more ice means colder,and so if it is colder it can last longer beacause the heat from the water cant raise the tempreture of the ice by alot as the heat has to go along a biger surface area and so the ice melt very slowly

The ice in the cup would melt faster because the melting point of ice is 0'c which means if the water is room temperature it will melt faster. When they add the ice in to the water they are expecting the water to be cooler as the ice would gain heat from the water and the water will lose heat to the ice cubes. But if more ice is added the tme taken for the ic eto melt would be longer as isf after one ice melts the water would lose heat so if the water loses heat there will be lesser hea tin the water to melt the ice.For example,if you are in a party and the drinks they serve are too sweet for you, you can add some ice in the drink because when they melt it will add more water into the drink which makes the mixture uneven and the drink will be less sweet.

The ice is zero degree celsius. When the water loses heat to the ice, the temperature of the water goes lower. Measure the temperature difference in water when ice cubes are just placed in water and the temperature difference in water after ice cubes are placed in the water for 10 minutes. Compare the temperatures. Which temperature is nearer to the frozen ice cubes? Of course the temperature where the ice cubes are placed for 10 minutes. The temperature of the water is much lower to the room temperature. The temperature of the water will keep decreasing( the ice cubes are inside the glass) until a certain limit. We don't see water frozen just of the ice cubes doing, do we? when temperature of water is lowered, the temperature of the water and the ice is lesser compared to the room temperature water and the ice. Therefore, it takes a longer time to melt into the liquid state. How do the ice cubes melt? Heat transfers to a colder part of an object. Thus, the heat from the water is transfered to the ice cubes, also, the heat from the cup is transfered to the water. Then, the surrounding heat is transfered to the cup.

1.When you put ice in water at room tenperature,it will melt as it gained heat from the water.The water loses heat to the ice cubes,causing the temperature of the water to decrease.Another possibility is that the water level in the cup will increase.This is so as ice is made up of water.When it melts,it returns to its liquid form,causing an increase in water level.
2.When there are more ice cubes in the water,the time needed to melt all the ice cubes will increase.This happens as the heat in the water needs to be distributed to more ice cubes.So,each ice cube will gain heat at a slower rate and the water will lose heat at a slower rate too.

I think putting the ice would cause it to lose heat to the water,thus it will melt and the water would be cooler.But the temperature of this proccess would still be the ame at 0^c.

As heat always flow from a hotter place to a cooler one , heat from the water will travel to the ice cubes and hence being cooled down.

The more ice cubes placed, the longer time it takes to melt in the liquid. No matter how many cubes are placed , the original amount of heat in the water is the same . Hence when more ice cubes are placed , the heat conducted to each ice cube is lesser , and thus as the ice cubes melt slower when there is less heat conducted to them.

1st question:
Heat travels from a warmer region to a cooler region.Therefore, heat from the cup of water will travel to the ice in order for the ice to melt, causing the temperature to be brought down.

2nd question:
all the ice has to melted for the temperature to continue rising from 0 degrees celsius.Hence, the time taken for the ice cubes will increase as the number of ice cubes in the cup increases

By putting ice cubes in a glass of water, it will cause the ice cubes to gain heat as it is lower in temperature compared to the water in the glass.
This will cause the ice to melt and absorb as much heat energy it would take. When the ice melts, it would then go beyond its equilibrium melting point.
Besides this, if there is more ice, the temperature of the water may the be lowered further. But of course it would not go down to Zero Degrees.

With alot of ice inside the glass, the temperature of the water would then be able to stay lower for a longer period of time to keep the water cold.The negative pint of this view is that the ice would also take a longer time to melt. However, the ice would still lose heat to the surroundings as the temperature around would definitely be hotter compared to the ice and water in the cup(If it is the winter of another country, the temperature would be cold and ice would no longer be of use.)

Do you wonder whether the mass of ice changes when it melts into water. Try this out:

1. Put a few ice cubes into a plastic bag
2. Tie the mouth of the bag tightly
3. Weigh the bag of ice cubes (if there is condensation outside the bag, wipe it dry before weighing)
4. Place the bag in the sun
5. When ice has melted, wipe the outside of the bag dry (refer to step 3)
6. Weigh the bag

You will discover that the mass of the bag remains the same!
There is no change in mass when ice melts!!
